Guarantee accessible evening transport for young people in rural areas

This policy proposal emerged from a Legislative Theatre session focused on the barriers experienced by young people living in rural or low-density areas.

In the theatre scene, young people showed how the lack of evening and weekend public transport prevents them from attending cultural activities, training opportunities, sports, youth meetings and social events. Participants identified that this situation increases isolation, limits equal access to public services, and makes young people dependent on private cars or family availability.

During the participatory discussion, the audience identified the transport authority, the municipality, schools, youth services and regional mobility planners as key actors involved in this issue. In the proposal drafting phase, participants called for a public mobility solution that responds to the real schedules and needs of young people.

The proposal asks the municipality and regional transport authority to review current bus schedules, create evening and weekend connections between villages and youth activity centres, and explore flexible or on-demand transport options for young people.

The expected result is that young people in rural areas can access educational, cultural, social and participatory activities without being excluded by lack of transport.
